Costs for our surrogacy journey totaled $113k and can be seen broken down below. Note that this includes not only contract costs, but everything related to the process (travel costs, legal costs, DNA testing, etc...). To fund this, we pursued (and would recommend if it's an option for you) a line of equity on our home with our bank.
We would highly suggest to have extra funds in place as a reserve in the event you encounter n hiccup in the road (for us, we had to purchase additional eggs due to a poor round of fertilization).
Finally, we would recommend to keep strict documentation of everything (receipts, bank transfer forms, travel costs) in an excel file along with a digital copy or scan of the receipt. Hire a CPA and provide them with your documents for your tax returns (it will be worth the investment to have it done correctly).
Costs include testing for both of us. One had a much higher sperm mobility rate, so we chose that person to be the biological father.
This is the stage 1 payment per our signed contract (included medical escrow).
For the initial semen deposit visit, we made it into a little vacation and stayed at an all-inclusive hotel (Iberostar – Coral Level). Costs include our flight and hotel stay, booked via Expedia.
This was the additional cost of eggs after our first round of fertilization failed. Note, the agency was generous and provided us some of their emergency funds to lower the cost due to the circumstances (by $825).
This is stage 2 payments per our signed contract. Note that this includes the monthly payments directly to our surrogate. These monthly payments each had an additional $75 cost for international wire fees (you pay for both parties’ fees).
This includes our airfare into Cancun ($475), a rental car ($1,296) and our rental stay for three weeks ($3,436). See the ‘Living in Cancun’ tab for more info.
This includes the final stage 3 payment per our signed contract.
We elected to have our friend (who is also a NICU nurse) stay with us for a week after the birth. Costs include airfare and transport to airport (and are higher as it was near 'spring break' time).
The closest embassy to issue an emergency passport is in Merida. Costs include hotel and travel costs (see “Embassy” tab for more information).
Costs include travel to get back home (we travelled a direct flight by Frontier). We purchased our son a seat too so we had space.
We hired a lawyer at home in the US to prepare our wills (required in the contract) as well as to review the agency contract and finally to follow up afterwards to file surrogacy petition in our local county.
Costs include extra notary services we needed in Cancun per our lawyer, an additional year of embryo storage, and voluntary DNA testing (23 and Me).
